Description
About This ClassWhen I set out to create a new class, I am also creating art that I can use for side-hustle projects. Why not create art with multiple purposes, right? I think about methods I’d be able to employ if I wanted to produce 2 or 3 of the same artwork (or 10!). Using a stencil seems like it would be a great way to do that. If I were to produce multiple stencils and then use the same techniques to add the gouache details, I could only improve as I work my way through. That’s what I have done here and at the end of class, you will see more than one artwork done using these techniques. This new class, Create a Gouache Floral Using a Stencil in Procreate, will show you what I have done to create this pretty floral artwork. Using photographic reference helps me because I can always look to that original to give me clues about adding details effectively and accurately. I use mostly gouache brushes, but you could pick any of your favorite brushes to use, as long as you are consistent. I even use mixed-media brushes to create a layered and detail-rich background. In the class, I take you from start to finish in creating a complete gouache and mixed-media piece. Working in layers allowed me to have control and at the end, so I could experiment with adding additional textures or even changing colors if I wished to.The art we’ll be creating is completely editable. One of my goals is to show you how we’ll be able to create an alternate design with a very different background. I am providing you with a bunch of assets to help speed up the process for you. This includes a bunch of brushes and a mixed media background you may choose to use.In this class I’ll walk you through:my step-by-step method for creating the initial stenciltips for layering the stencils for things like 2 part leavesmy workflow for use of layers and blending modesworking with gouache for blending and adding textureadding texture using additional brushesmethods for keeping the art fully editable for later adjustments and recoloringWhat can you use this art for? Do you think this is a technique that would lend itself well to creating sale-able or licensable art? Well, if nothing else, this class should get you into the right mindset. With the provided assets and the step-by-step instructions, you’ll be easily able to pull this off!The key concepts I will include:creating and use of a stencil from a photographic sourcea look at gouache brushes and how they can be used with blending techniquesapproaches you can take for creating different iterations of your backgroundLearning these techniques will give you a challenging yet satisfying new set of skills. With gouache and mixed-media digital art there are so many ready paths of exploration. I can’t wait to see what you produce!Intro to Create a Gouache Floral Using a Stencil in ProcreateThis short intro will give you an overview of the class.Lesson 1: Overview and ExamplesIn this lesson, I will give a ton of inspiration. Mixed media art can take so many forms, and I expose you to some of my favorites. I have a loaded Pinterest board for your use. Take a good luck at the ideas shared there for inspiration.Lesson 2: Creating the lnitial Stencil DocumentIn this lesson, I will break down the complete process of working with a photograph and blocking out the basic floral shapes. I will demonstrate using the photo as reference and I share many tips and tricks along the way.Lesson 3: Completing the Stencil and Color SchemeIn this lesson, I will explain the finishing of the stencil. By the end of the lesson, you will have the stencil complete. I will show you how to use the eraser to ensure that all the releases between shapes are consistent. I will also reinforce your knowledge of creating a color scheme from a photo.Lesson 4: Base Color Fills on the FlowersNow that we will tackle getting the main areas of color blocked in. I will show you finishing and correcting on the leaf shapes. Once complete, we will start looking at methods to add other areas of interest. During the process, I give you a step-by-step account of what I am doing.Lesson 5: Putting Down the lnitial GouacheAdding some of the gouache texture will be the focus of this lesson. I explain how to use the photograph as reference and demonstrate the techniques I would use with the clipping masks. You can use the brushes supplied or experiment with any textured brushes you may have.Lesson 6: Adding Highlights and ShadowsWe will do some finishing on what we started in this lesson and then I will show you how I start to build up the real dimension of the flowers. The brushes can be used to really deepen the color where we need to indicate depth. We will use similar techniques to do the opposite with a light color. You will soon see the real dimension beginning to form.Lesson 7: Leaves and Background FinishingIn this lesson, I will show you how to split the leaves and then I will proceed to painting them. Clipping masks get slightly more complicated here, but I explain it thoroughly, showing you what not to do as well as what to do. We will end up with some excellent dimension on the leaves here.Lesson 8: Various Background ldeasIn this lesson, I will show you a couple of the ideas I used to create a background. I suggest you bring in several mixed media backgrounds and then experiment with bending modes and adjusting color and intensity of the layers. I provide a few mixed media brushes too so you can have some fun creating an interesting and effective back-drop for your gorgeous illustration!Lesson 9: Closing Thoughts and Wrap UpWe will conclude everything in this lesson. I like showing what I have done on mock-ups because it helps to solidify what uses my artwork could have. Seeing it on mock-ups helps me to judge the effectiveness of the artwork and gives my ideas about how to group and arrange my art in subsequent iterations.Concepts covered:Concepts covered include but are not limited to Procreate floral illustration, Procreate layering, Procreate brushes, Procreate canvas settings, clipping masks and blending modes, mixed media in Procreate, adding a mixed media artwork for a background, using a photographic reference.
