Almost 60 years after his death Frank Ryan has been the subject of biographies, documentaries, ballads, novels and much academic debate. With the exception of Michael Collins, one historian recently asserted, he ‘is now the most admired political figure of modern Ireland’. This seems unlikely, but there is no doubting Ryan’s prominence as a ‘patron saint of the Irish Republican Left’, a status which contrasts with his relative lack of success in his own lifetime.
