Nowadays division would be performed on a calculator. But does poking buttons on a calculator really teach you anything about mathematics? To become proficient in mathematics you need to understand the basic principles of calculation. That’s why schools require students to learn how to perform division by hand, referred to as "long division", before relying on the calculator. And, if you did not have a calculator handy, and you needed to perform division, without knowing how to do long division, you would be out of luck.
In this book you learn how to perform long division, and you learn how to do it with decimal numbers and with signed numbers, and of course with signed decimal numbers. Each example page shows you a worked out example, and then provides another problem.
Teachers can choose from these practice problems to create work assignments and exam problems. Students also can choose from these practice problems to study for an exam. And there’s those people who just like working through problems like these to keep their mind sharp. So after reviewing the basic instructions, grab a pencil and a pad of paper, and start working your way through the examples.
Some people believe long division is tedious because it involves repeatedly multiplying the divisor until you find a number that is equal to, or greater than than the part of the dividend that you are working on, then subtracting, and repeating that process until you have worked across the entire dividend. Because this book is not about practice in repeated multiplication, I have provided a tiny app that will do that work for you. The app and how to use it is in the back of this book.
