These six papers are taken from a seminar involving law and graduate students at the Yale School of Law. The seminar was based on the premise that what are often called "peacekeeping" operations are in fact just "keeping stopped wars stopped" and should be understood as distinct from the actual process of making peace. The students were tasked with examining one conflict in depth, identifying the processes of war stopping and peace making involved in the conflict, and extracting general lessons. The chapters discuss the 1982 Falklands War; the late 1980s/early 1990s conflict in Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan; Rwanda in the early 1990s; the Malayan Emergency of 1948-1960; separatist insurgency in southern Thailand over the course of the 20th century; and the Mozambican Civil War of 1976-1992.
