It could be something that we have been doing for a long time, like studying, working, or raising children, or it could be an important accomplishment, like graduating from a university, getting married, or winning an award. It could even be a unique experience, like visiting a foreign country that we have always wanted to see, or seeing our favorite band play live. We all want to distinguish our special experiences from mundane, everyday activities. The perfect tense allows us to do this. We should use the present simple tense if we don’t want to suggest that the action had a special significance to us. We should use the present perfect tense if we want the listener to infer that this information is special to the speaker.
